Giulio Superti-Furga, Ph.D., was
born in Milan, Italy,
performed his graduate studies at the University of Zurich, Genentech, Inc. and the Institute for Molecular Pathology
in Vienna. He completed his Ph.D.at the University of Zurich in 1990.
He was a post-doctoral fellow at the EMBL and became a staff scientist
in 1993.
In 1995, Dr. Superti-Furga became an independent Team Leader at
the EMBL and his research was focussed on tyrosine kinases and signal
transduction. He is the author of more than 50 scientific publications and he is credited with discovering the
importance of intramolecular interactions in the regulation of oncogenic
tyrosine kinases.
He has consulted for major pharmaceutical companies and national
and international granting agencies. He also has served as an adjunct professor at
the University of Bologna
in Italy, the oldest university in the western world. He is a co-editor
for FEBS Letters. Together
with other EMBL scientists and international biotechnology industry leaders
he has founded the company Cellzome,
where he currently serves as Senior Vice President of Biology and Head of
the Heidelberg site.
