About Us
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a non-profit organisation and a basic research institute funded by public research monies from 20 member states and one associate member. Research at EMBL is conducted by approximately 85 independent groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology.

EMBL is an international research organisation that operates from five sites: the main laboratory in Heidelberg, and outstations in Hinxton, near Cambridge (the European Bioinformatics Institute), Grenoble, Hamburg, and Monterotondo, near Rome.
We offer a wide range of challenging scientific and non-scientific positions at all of our European locations and encourage applications from international candidates at all career levels. Search and apply for positions via EMBL’s recruitment portal.
EMBL alumni represent a unique and growing group of individuals who are actively bringing the exceptional experience of EMBL to the wider community, not only in basic research but also in industry, commerce, government and education.
As an international organisation, EMBL engages with numerous institutions in its member states and beyond. The International Relations Unit assists on all matters linked to international relations as well as shaping the external relations strategy.
EMBL has a responsibility and an interest to communicate with the public. We do so through a variety of initiatives, all aimed at making sophisticated science understandable to a range of audiences, from school pupils to politicians.
The principal aim of the Science and Society initiative at EMBL is to promote a better and broader understanding of the growing social and cultural relevance of the life sciences, encouraging dialogue through a variety of activities and events.
Together with the continuous support of its 20 member states and associate member state, Australia, philanthropic contributions and gifts are essential to the progress of a world-class scientific research and technology institution like EMBL.
The Administration at EMBL prides itself in the employment of a multinational staff of great experience and expertise. We are responsible for providing administrative services to 1600 members of personnel from more than 60 nations.
