Health and Safety Office
Welcome to the Health and Safety Office
The Health and Safety Office is concerned with all work-related aspects of health and safety, in particular biological, chemical and radiation safety, in the main laboratory in Heidelberg as well as the outstations.
A primary objective of the Health and Safety Office is the prevention of accidents and illnesses by ensuring good and safe working conditions. To make sure that employees stay happy and healthy, their workplaces are inspected and preventive measures are offered. The medical monitoring of all EMBL staff is arranged by the Health and Safety Office in coordination with the occupational physicians appointed by EMBL and administrative personnel.
The Health and Safety Office helps with the registration of laboratories, equipment and scientific projects according to the national legislation. Laboratories and other facilities are checked for safe working conditions. Training is given to staff on how to handle hazardous material and waste, how to avoid accidents and what to do in case of an incident.
Should an accident occur, an elaborated first aid structure is in place which includes the provision of first aid training on a regular basis. The Health and Safety Office organises and takes care of the disposal of all hazardous waste such as chemicals, biological and radioactive waste.
We are happy to provide help and advice on all health and safety related issues.
