Due to the somewhat reclusive location of the EMBL campus the provision of food is important for people working at EMBL as there are no shops nearby where to buy something to eat. Therefore EMBL has accommodated the needs of its employees and built a Canteen directly on the campus.

The Canteen is open throughout the year Monday to Friday from 11:45 until 13:30 (during the period between Christmas and New Year some restrictions apply) and offers a large selection of fresh and balanced meals. Every day employees and EMBL guests can choose between fresh fish, meat, vegetarian meals, all kinds of side dishes, a large salad bar and various desserts. Sometimes meals are prepared in “front cooking” style and you can see your meal being freshly cooked.

EMBL also operates a Cafeteria which offers all kinds of fresh breads, pastries, sandwiches, fruit, sweets as well as coffee and tea and all kinds of beverages at any time during the week between 08:00 and 20:00. Small dishes can also be ordered.

EMBL subsidises its Canteen and Cafeteria, so prices are moderate and reasonable and constitute a further benefit to our staff.

The Canteen and Cafeteria cater for meetings, courses, workshops and official events that either take place during the week, in the evenings or on weekends, guaranteeing a very flexible service and thus contributing to the participants’ all-round satisfaction.
