Biography: I studied Biology at the University of Salamanca and received my PhD in 1986 from the same University working on the cloning and characterisation of ß-glucanase genes in Saccharomyces cervisiae. Moving to the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda-USA) in 1987, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Eugenio Santos’ Laboratory studying signal transduction by Ras and other oncogenes. I then returned to Europe in 1992 to join Tim Hunt’s Group at the Cancer Research UK laboratory in Clare Hall (South Mimms, UK) focusing on cell cycle regulation by intracellular signalling pathways. In 1995 I was appointed Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg - Germany) where my team worked on Signal Transduction by MAP kinases and oocyte maturation. I joined the CNIO as a Senior Scientist and Head of the Signalling and Cell Cycle Group in 2004. I was elected Member of EMBO in 2003.
