How to search

Enter a search term in the search box at the top of the page, and press the "search" button.

The system searches the fields: First name, surname, research interests, current institute, city, country and nationality. The number of results are displayed directly under the search box, and the term queried is highlighted in the text.

Under the Search box at the top of the page, you will see the number of search results found for any one search.

You can filter a search by using the left-hand menu. Filters can only be applied AFTER you have begun a search. To cancel one or more filters, simply close the relevant filter from the "Filters" box at the top of the search list. Biography: I graduated in 1982 as an engineer (MEng) with a dissertation on the sequencing of Agrobacterium tumefaciens T-DNA border regions. The experimental work was performed at the Department of Genetics, University of Ghent (HoD, Prof. M. Van Montagu). My first job was as a Technical Assistant to Prof. M. Zabeau at the EMBL, Heidelberg, working on the EcoRI modification system. By the end of 1983 I moved back to Ghent to work in Plant Genetic Systems where I was involved in various projects but by 1986 I decided to 'go back to school' and travelled to South Africa for PhD studies in Microbiology. After obtaining my PhD in 1990 (University of Cape Town) for my work on nitrogen metabolism in Clostridium acetobutylicum I did a 2-year post-doc in Prof. L. Sonenshein's lab at Tufts University, Boston, once again working on nitrogen metabolism but this time in B. subtillus. This was followed by several post-doc positions in Wageningen, Leiden, and Ghent, entailing taxonomic studies on the genera Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, and Xanthomonas (1996-1998), and a Glaxo-Wellcome post-doctoral Fellowship at the Rega Institute of the Catholic University of Louvain (1998-2000). From January 2000 to early 2002 I was a TMR Fellow in Bioinformatics at the EBI-Hinxton (Cambridge). I worked briefly at the University of Liege in frame of an ongoing project for the European Space Agency to study genetic stability of bacteria under space conditions. I now continue this work at the SCK-CEN as a tenured scientist, while pursuing other research interests entailing T-RFLP based community analysis, bacterial radiotolerance, bioremediation, in-house genome projects (Cupriavidus metallidurans, Arthrospira platensis), and reconstruction of transcription regulatory networks.
