I built up the Institute's Department of Immunology and headed it until I left Cologne. We used mouse genetics to analyze the immune sysyem in the mouse (establishing conditional gene targeting in tyhis context) and worked on human B lymphocytes and B cell tumors. From 1996 to 2001 I took up a part-time job at the EMBL as Programme Coordinator of the newly established Mouse Biology Programme at Monterotondo near Rome, Italy. In 2001. In 2001 I moved my laboratory to Harvard medical School.
