Since 1994 is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Basilicata in Potenza, Italy. Teacher of Biochemistry and Enzymology. Lecturer of Neurochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine in Bari (since 1978).
The main areas of research are the following: Biochemistry of proteins and lipids. Structure of membranes. Neurochemistry and Neuroimmunology. Multiple sclerosis. Enzymology. Proteomics. Food sciences.Nutrition and Human Health.
Scientific activity in Germany: 1)Univ. of Munich, Faculty of Medicine, 1970, 1971-1975,1976 & 1977; 2) EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory), Heidelberg, 1979, 1981 & 1983.

    Publications: 139 papers & 5 patents, 2 in neurochemistry & 3 in food sciences.
The scientific interests of Paolo Riccio started in 1970 in Munich with Professor Martin Klingenberg at the Institut für Physikalisce Biochemie, Faculty of Medicine, with the study of mitochondria and the purification and characterization of the ADP/ATP carrier. This was the 1st mitochondrial carrier to be isolated in 1974. In cooperation with Prof. Gephard von Jagow in Munich, P.R. also succeeded (1976) in the one-step purification of Complex III of the respiratory chain from mitochondria.
In 1975 P.R. moved to the Institute of Biological Chemistry in Bari and in 1983, with Prof. Ernesto Quagliariello, started with the study of myelin. The most important result was the isolation of myelin basic protein (MBP) in the lipid-bound form.
Member of the Scientific Council of the Italian Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis (FISM) since 1988.
Chair of the European Network MARIE (Myelin Autoimmunity Research In Europe)of the European Science Foundation (ESF) 2004-2006, regarding Myelin Structure and Its Role in Autoimmunity.
