I attended the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and received his Ph.D. from the University of Madrid (UAM), Spain. My post-doctoral work was completed at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany and Duke University in Durham, N.C.
I has been honored with fellowships by the Ministry and Science and Education in Spain, the European Molecular Biology Organization, and the Raychem/Rogers/Morrish Fellowship at Duke University.

I did a postdoc at the University of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1995, working on mechanisms of splicing regulation in the lab of Michael Green. I joined EMBL as a group leader in 1996, and continued to work on splicing regulation within the Gene Expression Programme. In June 2002 I joined the Centre de Regulacio Genomica of Barcelona as an ICREA Research Professor.
