Job description:

EMBL is looking for a Head of Scientific Instruments Maintenance Team. The main mission of the team is to provide services to the research groups for the preventative and corrective maintenance on the full range of modern biology laboratory instrumentation including light and electron microscopes, centrifuges and core equipment, analytical devices and robotics. These services range from simple interventions to locate and replace the faulty parts to the exchange of entire parts of an instrument. The team also serves as a qualified interface to the manufacturers or distributors of scientific equipment in cases where the device needs to be sent back for reconditioning or complete overhaul. Part of the work of the team concerns the electrical safety of the equipment operated by the scientists according to the European safety rules for laboratory equipment. The Scientific Instrument Maintenance Team also carries out the preventative maintenance of general communal equipment for the whole laboratory. For these tasks they interact regularly with the in-house Safety Office and Building Maintenance. Another important aspect of the work relates to the negotiation and management of maintenance contracts with external suppliers of advanced instrumentation. In this task s/he will be supported by EMBL's administrative services (purchases, inventory, finances). The Head of the Scientific Maintenance Team will report to the Head of Core Facilities and Services Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for running a small team involved in the maintenance of sophisticated scientific instruments.

Qualifications
and experience:

The ideal candidate has a university degree in engineering electronics or physics. Additional qualifications obtained through industrial training at instrument manufacturers will be appreciated. Due to the broad range of scientific equipment involved in the job, the applicant will need a solid technical background in electronics, optics and mechanical engineering. A good knowledge of measurement techniques in bio-analytical instrumentation will be highly appreciated. The successful applicant must have at least five years practical experience in a similar position. Excellent ability to manage and organise the work of a small team is mandatory. It is expected that the candidate is proficient in MS Office applications and has expertise with database tools for the maintenance of equipments. The postholder should have strong communication skills (fluency in English and a good working knowledge of German) and be able to work in a highly collaborative international atmosphere.

Contract:

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
