Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) seeks a Director for the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) based just south of Cambridge in Hinxton, UK.

The European Bioinformatics Institute is part of EMBL, Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences. EMBL operates from five sites in four European countries and is headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany. The EMBL-EBI Director collaborates closely with two Associate Directors who have specific responsibility for service delivery. All three are part of EMBL’s collegial Senior Management, which is led by the EMBL Director General.

The new Director will be responsible for strategic and operational management of all aspects of EMBL-EBI, which employs 560 staff involved in research and service provision. The service portfolio includes provision of comprehensive collections of molecular life science data as part of strong international collaborations. A very strong technical software environment, with one of the largest bioinformatics computer infrastructures in the world, underpins the delivery of bioinformatics services that in total employ roughly 400 staff members.

The Director will also oversee a vibrant research community whose 16 participating groups work at the forefront of bioinformatics research. They are engaged in many aspects of research, frequently in collaboration with experimental colleagues in EMBL or beyond. Recruiting new research leaders and shaping the research portfolio is an important task.

EMBL-EBI has a thriving Industry Programme that engages with over 20 large bioscience companies and aims to help them make best use of public data. The recent Innovation and Translation Initiative has led to the establishment of a new Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and GSK, the UK pharmaceutical company, which aims to improve target validation using genomics and other public data. The Director will further develop both the Programme and the Initiative, seeking opportunities to work with the private sector and enable research and its translation.

EMBL-EBI played a leading role in the establishment of the distributed ELIXIR research infrastructure, and is itself an ELIXIR node. The ELIXIR Hub is housed at EMBL-EBI. The new Director will work, in collaboration with the ELIXIR Director and other nodes, to develop ELIXIR into a coordinated pan-European biological data infrastructure.

The successful individual will combine an outstanding record of relevant research achievements with proven managerial and organisational capability. The Director will have a full-time appointment and will be responsible for building on all aspects of EMBL-EBI’s current role and shaping it to match the demands of the future in both service provision and research. This will involve close interaction with many other bioinformatics centres. The Directorship represents an exceptional opportunity to contribute to shaping the institute in these exciting times and to developing Europe’s role in Life Science research and its applications in medicine, the environment and society.
