Competition

The prize is given annually for an outstanding piece of science writing designed to communicate a topical issue to a non-scientific audience. There is one winner only, and the prize may not be awarded twice to the same person.

Award

  • The sum awarded is Euro 1.000. In addition:
  • The winner will be invited to participate in the EMBL PhD symposium where she/he will read her/his piece in front of the audience.
  • The winner will receive one year's free subscription to EMBO reports.
  • The winning essay will be published in the PhD symposium conference book.

Eligibility

Eligible is any life scientist working in Europe up to and including 35 years of age at the submission deadline.

Entries must

  • be written using language and style suitable for a non-scientific audience.
  • be no longer than 1.000 words.
  • be written in English (but a version in another language may be submitted in addition).
  • NOT already have been published, or be awaiting publication, either on paper or on the Internet.

Only one entry may be submitted, using the online application form.

Images accompanying entries may be submitted by email to scisoc@embo.org.

Applicants may take their inspiration from the theme of the EMBL PhD Symposium when considering a topic for their essay. However, this is not a criterion for acceptance.

Deadline for receipt of articles: 25 September 2008.

Selection of a winner

Entries will be judged by a multinational jury including EMBL PhD students, EMBO and EMBL staff as well as EMBO members.

One winner only will be selected.

The jury will particularly look for essays that are innovative, interesting to a non-specialist audience, and are written in language that is attractive and engaging to read for non-scientists.
