Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was one of the most prolific composers in musical history. In nearly all genres, he created a multitude of works (eg. Christmas Oratory, St. John's Passion, St. Matthew's Passion), among which his cantatas and oratorios are particularly outstanding.
His compositions for keyboard instruments are by no means less important, from which the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) stand out.
They are Bach's only variation work and are considered one of the most unique and demanding pieces in the piano repertoire.
Various organisations attend to the research and conservation of Bach's works. Among them are
Bach-Archiv Leipzig (German, English)
Internationale Bach-Gesellschaft (German)
