Welcome to the PhD core course in molecular systems biology. This course is a requirement for the completion of a PhD degree at EMBL. It is offered to entering PhD students in the first year of their doctoral studies. It introduces students to the state-of-the-art in the field of molecular biology and provides an overview of current research at EMBL.
Scientific research is no longer confined by disciplinary borders. The traditional disciplines of biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and many more are merging to create new, integrated areas like bioinformatics, systems biology and molecular medicine. The course aims to prepare our students - the next generation of researchers - for the challenges imposed by these developments.
The course is divided into modules which approach life from different layers of complexity, ranging from the study of DNA sequences, mRNAs, proteins, protein complexes, cells, and organisms, to the biological and evolutionary forces that interlink them.
This course has been newly implemented this year, thanks to the recommendations of a PhD course working group consisting of both students and faculty.
