Endnote and Web of Science Training

The Library offers regularly training for free for Endnote X4 and Web of Science. Training times will be announced on the website, by flyers or users can make a request for a session and details at library@embl.de.

Short description of course:

This practical course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction into the ENDNOTE software. The course will mainly be a hands-on training and it is suitable for beginners or advanced users, the outlay of the course will be adapted to the attendees’ skills.

The following features of ENDNOTE will be covered:

  • Online searches and uploading references into an ENDNOTE library;
  • Automatic uploading of PDFs, inserting attachments and figures into an ENDNOTE library;
  • Uploading references from existing PDFs;
  • Auto-updating of references;
  • Use of additional searching tools in combination with ENDNOTE;
  • Inserting and amending references and bibliographies in a Word document;
  • Creating Smart and Subject Groups;
  • Amend ENDNOTE library, reference and output style displays and contents;
  • Using filters and transfer data from ENDNOTE libraries into other libraries as well as ENDNOTEWEB.

 

Web of Science

Web of Science is one of the biggest literature databases in the world, it is a competitor of Scopus and complements other databases, e.g. PubMed.

Target Group: Researchers interested in effectively using one of the world’s biggest citation databases, covering over 10,000 high impact journals and the corresponding current and retrospective science literature.

Short description of course:

This practical course will provide you with an introduction into the Web of Science database. It will enable you to use the basic search functions and standard add-on features. The course will mainly be a hands-on training and is suitable for beginners.

The following features of Web of Science will be covered:

  • simple search – get hold of the articles you are after;
  • cited reference search;
  • advanced search – drill down in depth for more results;
  • Interpretation of results page – find out which articles cite a known article & find articles using the same references; and find out about your h-factor;
  • search history & alerts – get updates on your e-mail, when relevant new articles are published;
  • Journal citation reports/ impact factor – find out how ‘big’ a journal is.
