ELLS LearningLAB: Cell Cycle and Disease

ELLS LearningLAB Heidelberg

EMBL Heidelberg, Germany, 18 March- 20 March 2009

Aims

Cell division is one of the most fundamental processes of life. It is the process that underlies the development of a single cell into a multicellular organism, it determines the shape of different life forms and it allows our body to heal when injured. The most important thing during cell division is that a full complement of undamaged chromosomes ends up in each daughter cell. Successful cell replication depends on two critical processes: the replication of DNA, and mitosis -- the nuclear division of the daughter cell from the mother cell. Faulty cell division or defective DNA repair increases the risk of mutations that can contribute to cancer and other diseases.

The course will look at the process of cell division, the regulation of the eukaryotic cell cycle and examine how errors can cause diseases. It will relate to several areas of post-16 biology curricula: mitosis, cell death, genetic diseases.

Topics

During the 3 day-course teachers will have the opportunity to:

- Review what we know about cell division and touch on some unanswered questions.
- Look at some of the most up-to-date techniques scientists use to study cell division.
- Perform practical experiments to understand the cell cycle.
- Learn about cell cycle control and cancer.
- Reflect on the impact of basic research on modern medicine.
