The 15th EMBL PhD Symposium
Competition in Biology: The Race for Survival, from Molecules to Systems
EMBL Heidelberg, Germany Thursday 21 November - Saturday 23 November 2013 Registration deadline: Monday 30 September 2013Abstract deadline: Friday 20 September 2013

The Symposium is an annual event, organised by first-year PhD students at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. It brings together fellow students from around the world, for a 3-day series of talks by leading experts but also by students themselves. Networking opportunities, poster sessions and workshops are also included in the programme.

Summary
Competition is fundamental to all aspects of biology. At the molecular level, DNA sequences compete for transcription factor binding to be expressed, pathogens compete against host immune systems, cells in communities compete for resources and, on a larger scale, organisms compete for limited resources in their environment. Our conference will connect competition at these different levels of complexity, offering a fresh and exciting perspective on the life sciences.
