Why attend?

Successful researchers generate successful research - and ultimately life changing outcomes for patients.  What can be done to foster success?

Competent professionals, who are committed to staying at the leading edge of developments in their field and developing their personal skills, are the underlying foundation of successful research. However, established mechanisms for maintaining professional competence and traditional career paths are being challenged.  Changes in the employment landscape in industry and academia,  the cross-disciplinary nature of modern science, the need for greater collaboration across traditional sectoral boundaries and the increased need for training to be responsive to real-life working, are all impacting on how the biomedical sector maintains a fit-for-purpose workforce. So how can your organisation and indeed YOU be ‘fit for the future’ in this environment?

This conference is a new international forum to bring together the key influencers, policymakers, and stakeholders from academia, industry and the professional bodies who will shape and implement how career-long continuing professional development is managed in the future. It will encompass career-long continuing professional development for both the academic and industry sectors. The sessions will present real-life examples of how the challenges are being addressed:

Session 1: Stimulating inter-sectoral mobility
Developing scientific professionals who have the skills to work both in academia and in industry

Session 2: Fostering interdisciplinarity
The need for scientific professionals to identify and develop the competencies for optimal professional practice and cross-discipline working

Session 3: Developing cross-cutting skills
Developing scientific professionals who have the cross-cutting skills such as managerial and leadership skills, financial awareness, interpersonal skills, communication skills and ethical values

Session 4: Transformative learning: applying learning in the workplace
Training that is transformative such that it is applied directly to and improves daily working practice

The Programme includes opportunities for networking and collaboration including Meet the Speakers, Panel discussion, Showcase event, Poster session, and Birds-of-a-Feather event.

  • Employers in academic and industrial settings (ranging from HR professionals in the pharmaceutical industry to biomedical science research infrastructures to deans of graduate studies and researcher developers) who will hear how organisations have benefitted from supporting training and development and how to implement mechanisms to create a more highly skilled and agile workforce
