Papers for Selection
Dynamic behavior of an intrinsically unstructured linker domain is conserved in the face of negligible amino acid sequence conservation.Daughdrill GW, Narayanaswami P, Gilmore SH, Belczyk A, Brown CJ
J Mol Evol. 2007 Sep;65(3):277-88. Epub 2007 Aug 25.
PMID: 17721672
They examined a flexible linker peptide between 2 globular domains and its homologous and found out that backbone flexibility is conserved but not the amino acid sequence. This provides an example that sequence conservation is not required for conservation of molecular function.

Alternative splicing and protein structure evolution.
Birzele F, Csaba G, Zimmer R
Nucleic Acids Res. 2008 Feb;36(2):550-8. Epub 2007 Nov 30.
PMID: 18055499
They performed a study on different alternative splicing sides and show that deletions and insertions are more tolerated than expected and provide proteins of different function instead of non-functional ones. They suggest a more important role of splicing for evolution than thought before.

Intrinsic disorder in pathogenic and non-pathogenic microbes: discovering and analyzing the unfoldomes of early-branching eukaryotes.
Mohan A, Sullivan WJ Jr, Radivojac P, Dunker AK, Uversky VN
Mol Biosyst. 2008 Apr;4(4):328-40. Epub 2008 Feb 21.
PMID: 18354786
They investigated proteomes of pathogenic protozoa with regard to their content of disordered regions and compared it to data from eukaryotic cells. They suggest that the occurence of much more disorder in protozoa can be related to a parasitic lifestyle and the evolution of this class of organisms.
