Introduction to Multiple Sequence Alignment and Phylogenies
Thursday 4th - Friday 5th March, 2010
Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, UK
This introductionary two-day courses focuses
on multiple sequence
alignment
(MSA) and phylogenetics - tools important for a wide range of
different
bioinformatic analyses e.g. protein structure prediction,
comparative genomics etc.
The course will focus on providing experience of examining,
manipulating, and interpreting the results of these analyses: in
particular of tree topologies, branch lengths, roots, splits, and
positional equivalence in MSAs. Another focus will be on giving
examples of biological questions that can be investigated using MSAs
and phylogenies.
Please note that the focus is on protein sequences - although in some
places, examples will include nucleic acid sequences.
