On 9 May, the Argentinean flag flew over EMBL’s headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, as the laboratory welcomed Lino Barañao, Argentine Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, and Agueda Menvielle, National Directress of International Relations. The visit took place in the context of a continuing commitment by EMBL and the Argentine Republic to enhance strategic scientific cooperation.

EMBL’s guests were welcomed by Director General Iain Mattaj, who later gave an introduction to the laboratory’s programmes and activities. In the spirit of reciprocity and accord, the Argentine Minister gave members of the EMBL Directorate a fascinating insight into research developments in Argentina. The guests also received a presentation on technology transfer by EMBL’s commercial arm, EMBLEM, before taking a tour of the laboratory’s Core Facilities.

In November last year, EMBL Director General Iain Mattaj and Minister Lino Barañao signed a Memorandum of Understanding, thereby formalising a shared commitment to enhancing long-term cooperation between EMBL and Argentina.
