Postdoctoral Fellowship - Integrated Structural Biology of Proteins involved in Cancer Metastasis
Location:Hamburg, Germany
Staff Category:Postdoctoral Fellow
Contract Duration:2 years
Closing Date:15 April 2018
Reference Number:HH_00132

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes that are of medical relevance. Most of our projects require the combined use of different structural biology methods by combined and integrative approaches, generally followed by functional experiments.

Project Outline: Retinoic acid-induced protein 2 (RAI2) is a human protein that plays a critical role in cancer metastasis (Werner et al. (2015) Cancer Discov. 5:506-19). Its cellular function is regulated by multiple interactions with the “hall mark” cancer protein CtBP1/2. In collaboration with a partner group from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, we are aiming for a structural and functional investigation of the mechanisms underlying the regulation of RAI2 activity by CtBPs. Our data will feed into ongoing translational research to target the protein by anti-tumor compounds.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition and excellent communication skills, and previously demonstrated expertise in structural biology and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, protein purification). Additional expertise in biochemistry (in vitro and cell-based assays) and cell biology (including imaging) would be advantageous.
