Postdoctoral Fellowship - Integrated Structural Biology of the Von Willebrand Factor
Location:Hamburg, Germany
Staff Category:Postdoctoral Fellow
Contract Duration:2 years
Closing Date:15 April 2018
Reference Number:HH_00135

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes that are of medical relevance. Most of our projects require the combined use of different structural biology methods by combined and integrative approaches, generally followed by functional experiments.

Project Outline: The Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) is a large multi-domain protein assembly, which plays a crucial role in primary hemostasis in humans. The function of the VWF is regulated by shear forces, multimerization, and by binding to protein ligands. In collaboration with clinicians, biologists and physicists we are working towards a thorough understanding of the different structural and functional control mechanisms of VWF activity. This project aims at providing structural information of the VWF using an integrated structural biology approach, including X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy that can guide follow-up functional studies. An advanced understanding of the underlying mechanisms regulating the activity of the VWF will allow the development of novel medical applications to target this protein in the clinic.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition and excellent communication skills, and previously demonstrated expertise in structural biology and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, protein purification). Additional expertise in biochemistry (in vitro and cell-based assays) and cell biology (including imaging) would be advantageous.
