The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).
The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes that are of medical relevance. Most of our projects require the use of different structural biology methods by integrative approaches, generally followed by functional experiments.
Task Outline: Structural biology is undergoing a rapid transition by combining experimental and computational biology methods allowing for a holistic understanding of important biological processes. The EMBL Hamburg Unit has a long-standing research record in X-ray based structural biology (protein crystallography, small angle X-ray scattering). New opportunities for integrated structural biology are emerging with the establishment of top-notch cryo-electron microscopy facilities at the new Center for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) and the recent recruitment of an EMBL research group with expertise in computational structural biology (Jan Kosinski). The candidate will establish a platform feeding different experimental structural biology data into an integrative structural modeling pipeline in collaboration and to the benefit of research groups at the CSSB and the EMBL. In addition to combining already established structural biology methods, the candidate will establish routine protein cross-linking mass spectrometry in cooperation with the EMBL Proteomics Core Facility. The applicant will contribute to ongoing research projects and may develop own research interests and focus.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field with at least two years of postdoctoral experience, a proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition and excellent communication and organization skills. Previously demonstrated expertise in sample preparation, structural biology and biophysical methods is essential. Additional knowledge of mass spectrometry and computational biology will be considered highly advantageous.
