Training is a core activity across EMBL-EBI, involving almost every part of the organisation and coordinated by a team of 21 people. The Training Team delivers a world-recognised programme that encompasses face-to-face and online learning, training trainers and secondments. Scientific Training Officers and Systems Administrators work with the Scientific Training Coordinator to produce and deliver scientific course content; Events Organisers work with the Events Manager to organise course logistics, and Project Managers work with the Head of Training to deliver innovative projects to build capacity and Infrastructure for Bioinformatics and Data science.

Your role

We have recently been awarded funding by the MRC to develop training, both face-to-face and online, to support researchers generating single-cell RNA sequencing data, especially those wishing to submit their data to the Developmental Cell Atlas and the Human Cell Atlas. The focus of this role is therefore on developing training courses and knowledge-exchange workshops on single-cell RNA sequencing, from management and curation of such data, through to analysis and interpretation. Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Training Coordinator and other members of the DCA/HCA consortia to develop and deliver face to face and e-learning training courses at EMBL-EBI. This development involves liaison with researchers and trainers to ensure that course programmes meet the needs of their target audiences. Delivery involves being present throughout the duration of these courses, which involves some work outside of normal office hours.
  • Monitoring and responding to feedback from courses for the purposes of quality control.
  • Contributing to the collection and analysis of training statistics with other colleagues.
  • Working with HCA researchers, the data co-ordination centre, and the Gene Expression team at EMBL-EBI to develop training materials for face-to-face and online delivery.
  • Assisting others to develop their training skills, both within and beyond EMBL-EBI.
  • Working with events organisers to deliver training events and ensure that course information (including web pages) is kept up to date.

You have

You should possess a PhD, and ideally some postdoctoral experience, in the molecular life sciences or a related subject. A teaching or training qualification would be an added bonus but is not essential.

As the training to be developed is focused on single cell RNA sequencing, we would ideally like to recruit an individual who has experience of this technology and / or experience of analysing such data.

In addition to being highly self-motivated, you must have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work well as part of a team.

Your ability to work to deadlines is essential. Candidates with a desire to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply, and experience of working with multiple partners from different countries across Europe would be a distinct advantage.

You might also have

Good working knowledge of multiple operating systems would be advantageous; experience of programming is not necessary although could be an asset.
