The Technical Services Cluster (TSC) Infrastructure Manager (IM) would support the procurement, reporting (to assess their cost and use) and related project management of our internal and external IT services. In particular those supported by a £43M, 5 year grant provided by the UKRI’s Strategic Priorities Fund for BioData Infrastructure at EMBL-EBI .

You will be working on a 3 year project reporting in to the Head of TSC, and working closely with the teams within the TSC and have a responsibility within the BioData Infrastructure Project Office at EMBL-EBI. You will manage the interaction with TSC and the Project Office by establishing process and ensuring reporting are in place as part of our ‘business-as-usual’ activity, to ensure the funds are spent effectively and reporting occurs, and that the resulting hardware or services meet the defined user needs.

Your role

  • Producing statistics and usage reports relating to our services to assess the value of internal vs external service provision and to support the reporting needed to support internal and external funding.

  • Collecting user feedback around our IT services to argument feedback collected by TSC teams to enable their managers to decide on priorities on where to invest BioData funds.

  • Ensuring the resulting equipment and services are efficiently brought into use by facilitating cross team implementation plans and assisting the teams in standardizing inter-team processes.

  • Tracking assets (software, hardware and services) and facilitate the timely planning of renewal/replacement/retirement across TSC teams, including services procured through public cloud providers.

  • Project manage activities, and facilitate and improve process that cross TSC teams when identified and requested by the TSC management in order to improve our response to stakeholders.

  • Work with TSC teams and their user communities through the TSC Users Committee to ensure TSC services are both aligned with their needs and that TSC services are credited in papers / reports / slides where appropriate.

  • Facilitate and increase cross TSC team processes to ensure services that cross team boundaries are well defined and responsive to stakeholder requirements.

You have

  • Demonstrable technical knowledge of large-scale IT services and infrastructures (both on premise and cloud providers) and their related technologies and services.

  • Manage equipment & service lifecycles (planning, specification, purchase, commission, monitoring and decommissioning of storage, network and compute equipment or services).

  • Show excellent interpersonal skills and be able to facilitate inter-/intra- team communications and relationships (both orally and in writing) including explaining and representing technical issues clearly to management and users.

  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, organise, run and effectively report on multiple projects multi-tasking with potentially evolving requirements and be capable of adapting to stakeholder feedback while balancing and prioritising actions to complete the projects on schedule.

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to, be pro-active, optimise/automate processes within organisations where possible and engaging with users to establish their IT requirements.

You might also have

  • Experience of the implementation or operation of a Service Management System and related processes (e.g. ITIL), including establishing and monitoring operational service levels, ideally as part of a service portfolio.

  • Comfortable producing meaningful statistics from disparate data sources.

  • Experience of working in projects with potentially complex stakeholder and governance structures.

  • Be comfortable in representing the technical activities of EMBL-EBI and the Technical Services Cluster to internal and external audiences.

  • Knowledge of and integration with major public cloud providers and their use with on premise IT service within a hybrid cloud environment.

  • Experience of specifying requirements for software services to integrate organisational information management systems relating to IT activities (e.g. request tracking, resource usage, metrics, etc.).
