We are looking for a User Interface (UI)/User Experience (UX) Designer to join us in the exciting role of helping shape one of the world’s leading scientific resources, the Universal Protein resource (UniProt) at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The successful candidate will have the wonderful opportunity of interacting with scientists in the field of biology and medicine, collect their requirements, and help with the design of the best innovative interfaces for our services. S(he) will be based in a multidisciplinary team within the Protein Function group and will respond to the UX Manager and the Protein Function development Team Leader.

The Protein Function development team maintains bioinformatics infrastructure of the world leading Universal Protein Resource (UniProt), Gene Ontology Annotation and Enzyme resource. This is a very dynamic and interdisciplinary team comprising talented and enthusiastic software engineers and bioinformaticians working closely together with the biocurators in these resources.
The UniProt resource is one of the most internationally used protein databases serving a large and diverse research community in genomics, proteins and proteomics. UniProt is an international Consortium, a collaboration between the EMBL-EBI, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB), and the Protein Information Resource (PIR) in US.

Your role

The successful candidate will have the wonderful opportunity of interacting with scientists in the field of biology and medicine, collect their requirements, and design the best innovative interfaces for our services.
Responsibilities include:
  • Translating concepts into wireframes, mockups and component designs for a wide range of devices and interfaces for an intuitive user experience.
  • Work closely with developers on the Design System, creating UI patterns to be re-used throughout our interfaces. Participate in user research activities (via user interviews, usability studies, focus groups, surveys, etc.) and rapidly test and iterate your designs.
  • Collaborate with product management and engineering to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals and experience.
  • Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards.
  • Effectively communicate interaction and design ideas, present key deliverables to peers and senior stakeholders.

You have

  • Proficiency in Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, or other visual design and wire-framing tools as well as standard UX software such as InVision, Balsamiq, Framer.
  • Experience working collaboratively within teams and other stakeholders. Open to constructive criticism and feedback.
  • A solid grasp of user-centered design (UCD) and experience/interest in planning and conducting user testing, A/B testing, accessibility analysis etc.
  • Can apply best practices in web-based typography, colour theory, page layout, and iconography.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
This post explicitly bridges human and technical skills, and will suit someone who enjoys interaction, and can listen to diverse user opinions and synthesise them into creative designs. The post holder must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy working in an international environment. Ideally, (s)he has already gained experience in a multilingual working environment. Excellent English language skills are essential.
