The Chemogenomics Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for a outstanding web developer with a flair for data visualisation to design, develop and maintain web-based interfaces for the EMBL-EBI chemogenomic resources.

ChEMBL is a world-leading chemogenomics resource, providing open bioactivity data and associated tools to the scientific community. We have a considerable number of users from academia and industry. You will work in a team-oriented environment, collaborating closely with fellow scientists and technical experts, chemo- and bio-informaticians and software engineers across EMBL-EBI and with our many external partners from the UK and internationally. You will have excellent attention to details, strong communication skills and be able to interact with scientists as well as technical experts, seeking solutions to their "real world" problems.

Your role

Your role will be to contribute to the design, development and maintenance of web-based tools and interfaces within the Chemogenomics Team, with a particular focus on visualisation of complex biological data.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Liaising with scientists and gathering specifications, based on project requirements
  • Writing well designed, testable, efficient code by using best software development practices
  • Developing existing tools/applications or creating new ones, as required
  • Creating re-usable visual components that can be shared among multiple resources
  • Creating and maintaining code documentation
  • Working with other members of the team and sharing best practices

You have

The successful candidate will hold a BSc (or equivalent) in a technical subject (e.g. a life science, computing or mathematics). They will have a proven track record of developing web-based applications in an industrial or academic environment. A history of good practice in software engineering, rapid development cycle, user-friendly web-interfaces and good code documentation and version control are all essential.
  • Fluency in modern web-development technologies - HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Experience using JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React or Angular
  • Experience in at least one JavaScript visualization library (e.g., d3)
  • Proficient in Python and Python web frameworks (particularly django/Flask)
  • Routine use of version control systems (e.g., GitHub)

You might also have

It is advantageous for applicants to have formal training in web application design and development, as well as two or more years of postgraduate experience in software development. Experience of developing web applications in a life science environment is also advantageous.
  • Experience developing web applications using Elasticsearch is highly desirable
  • Experience working with SQL (e.g., Oracle PostgreSQL) and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB) would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies and experience of building Docker images would be advantageous
  • Hands-on experience interacting with RESTful APIs is also desirable
