We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Data Coordination and Archiving Team at the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which provides data coordination services for partners around the world for a portfolio of sequencing-based studies. With underlying infrastructure for these services based around the European Nucleotide Archive – one of life science’s largest and longest standing data resources – this is an opportunity to rise to the challenges of ‘big data’ and make contributions that advance the reach and utility of sequence data.

Your role

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Darwin Tree of Life (https://www.darwintreeoflife.org/) project that aims to sequence the genomes of all 60,000 species of eukaryotic organisms in the British Isles. The objectives include producing specialised data indexing, presentation and retrieval microservices APIs, a data tracking system, and the main public web portal for the project. These interfaces will improve the discoverability and usability of the mass of data generated by the project. Finally, you will have responsibilities to contribute further to biodiversity genomics services and operations beyond the Darwin Tree of Life project.

You will design, develop and extend software, selecting appropriate technologies, to meet the data indexing and presentation needs of your projects. You will work with teams from across EMBL-EBI and collaborate with experts to provide innovative solutions, representing EMBL-EBI at project meetings and international conferences.

You have

Education: You should have a university degree in the computer or life sciences.~

Experience: at least three years experience in a software developer capacity, including
  • Strong command of Java, including Spring/Spring Boot
  • RESTful APIs
  • Developing web-based applications (html, css, Javascript frameworks such as Angular)
  • Proficiency with databases (Relational and noSQL)
  • Shell scripting
  • Adept in the full software development cycle including design, implementation, testing, version control and deployment

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Willingness to learn new skills as the project requires
  • Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills

  • Microservices architecture
  • ElasticSearch or similar data warehousing technology
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Containerisation (Docker or similar) and orchestration
  • Cloud deployment
  • Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environment.
