The Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies Team builds international infrastructure for mammalian phenotypic models data archiving, integration and dissemination. The team is a partner on several international projects all these externally funded projects share a common theme of data integration of rich phenotypic data derived from model species to better understand gene function, disease phenotypes and progression and how genetic variation contributes to disease. The team consists of domain area experts, semantics experts, software developers, statisticians and bioinformaticians. Recent papers are list on the team's web page

Your role

The Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies Team requires a highly motivated project lead to support our patient derived xenograft cancer models repository PDX Finder. This person will assess and prioritise the needs of the oncology research community for Patient Derived Xenograft models and will manage the software development team (4 people) to ensure features of the PDX Finder resource are delivered in a timely manner.

As part of the software development cycle, the Project Lead will be the product owner of our agile development process and will work with the scrum master to ensure developed software meets user requirements, and to develop longer term strategic planning with the principal investigators. You will also lead collaborative efforts with our Jackson Laboratory partners from the Mouse Tumor Biology Project to ensure the resource is robust, reproducible and deliver results require by our user community.

You will be expected to give seminars, contribute to publications, coordinate outreach activities and collaborations related to the project, and perform data integration with EBI and external data resources.

Your specific goals and tasks:
  • Ensure development of the PDX Finder resource meets needs of the user research community by determining requirements and overseeing the work of the software developers
  • Participate in the software development cycle as product owner
  • Manage collaborative development activities with other EMBL-EBI resources including SPOT, EGA and the Web development team
  • Coordinate development activities with outside collaborators at NCI, UCSF and Jackson Labs.
  • Contribute to strategic planning of the development of PDX Finder
  • Ensure training and documentation is up-to-date
  • Engage with users in seminars, workshops and writing collaborative publications
  • Developing user training materials for the project in collaboration with the EMBL-EBI training team

You have

The Project Lead should have:
  • Completed an MSc/PhD level or equivalent in a Biomedical discipline, preferably in cancer models
  • Experience in managing software developers in a bioinformatics environment
  • Proficient in the use of ontologies for indexing, archiving and disseminating complex biological data
  • Commitment to producing high-quality data
  • Experience in the development and use of bioinformatics resources
  • Excellent communication skills - essential to effective collaboration within the team and our partners in other countries and institutions.
  • Willingness to undertake international travel
