We are seeking a Full Stack Developer/Web developer for deployment in the task force building the COVID-19 Portal, a part of the European COVID-19 Data Platform.  

Your role

This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to EMBL-EBI’s COVID-19 scientific response. The European COVID-19 Data Platform comprises two components: the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs for the management of outbreak sequence data and the COVID-19 Portal ( that will enable researchers to upload, access and analyse COVID-19 related reference data and specialist datasets.

As part of the EMBL-EBI COVID-19 Portal task force you will help to develop innovative web based presentations of COVID-19 data and tools held across EMBL-EBI archives for a wider scientific audience than our traditional bioinformatics customer. 

You will help design and repurpose software, including investigating and selecting appropriate technologies, to meet the data indexing and presentation needs of the project.

You will work with teams from across EMBL-EBI and collaborate with expert scientists in a local and international setting to create innovative services.  

You have

You should have a university degree in the computer sciences or life sciences and have several years’ experience in a software developer capacity with the following experience:
  • Experience developing or maintaining web-based applications (html, css, Javascript frameworks such as Angular framework and the Angular material UI library of components). Angular framework experience is highly desirable.
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Containerisation (Docker or similar) and container orchestration
  • RESTful APIs
  • Proficiency with database connectivity. Relational and noSQL databases (document stores (e.g MongoDB) or search engines (ElasticSearch))
  • Experience in full stack software engineering practises and development cycle including design, implementation, testing, version control and deployment
  • Willingness to learn new skills as the project requires
  • Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills

  • Experience with Jupyter ipython notebooks
  • Experience with microservices architecture
  • Experience with Cloud deployment
  • Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environment.
  • Experience in the design and management of biomolecular data resources
  • Experience in the data curation process
  • Experience dealing with an international audience of scientists, which may not be the usual EMBL-EBI customer.
