We are looking for two enthusiastic Full Stack Developers to join the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in our mission to create scientific web services that are aesthetically pleasing, useful, usable, and empower our employees and scientists worldwide to solve the biggest challenges in biology. You will join our Web Development team, located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Web Development team includes User Experience (UX) Designers and Web Developers and works closely with the Digital Communications Team based at EMBL in Heidelberg.

As a Full Stack Developer in our team you will be working on a variety of projects in close collaboration with our designers and developers as well as a wide range of people and teams across EMBL-EBI. Our recent projects include redesigning our Training website, designing the COVID-19 data portal in response to the current pandemic and shaping the look and feel of our widely-used, cutting-edge scientific services, which help address some of the world’s most important challenges such as climate change and loss of biodiversity.

Your role

You will be applying your expertise to a wide range of projects and services.

You main responsibilities will be
  • Developing JavaScript/TypeScript Single Page Applications
  • Developing and consuming APIs for content management systems and data resources
  • Assisting with the maintenance of Wordpress plugins and Drupal modules
  • Helping to operate and iteratively improve the products we build
  • Defining, with the team, the technical architecture for products
  • Coaching and mentoring other team members, and participating in code reviews
  • Working directly with stakeholders to better understand their needs, in order to feedback and translate these into product changes
Typically, we work on projects within a structure of dedicated sprints, with time between projects to help us cover our operational and business as usual (BAU) activities. You will be helping with both projects and our BAU activities.

You have

  • A BSc or MSc in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or a similar/related discipline) or equivalent work experience 
  • Proficiency with the core skills of HTML5/CSS/ES6 development
  • Proficiency with modern object-oriented PHP frameworks (e.g. Symfony, Laravel)
  • At least two years experience developing and architecting JavaScript SPAs (e.g. React, Angular, Vue.js)
  • Experience working with APIs and common authentication models
  • Detailed understanding of the tools and processes of the trade - Git, continuous integration pipelines, CLIs, security, unit testing, user stories, etc
  • Experience being part of an agile development process, participating throughout the software delivery lifecycle
  • Experience of communicating and collaborating directly with stakeholders and users to better understand their needs

You might also have

  • Experience developing content based websites for non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work in both Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of web applications security 
  • A good working knowledge of Wordpress and Drupal as content management systems
  • Experience running and troubleshooting web application servers (e.g. Apache, Nginx)
  • Experience with VM and/or container deployment (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker, etc)
  • An interest in life sciences and a desire to work in a stimulating and international culture
