The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; is a founding partner of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB;, which maintains the PDB, the global archive of 3D structural data on biomacromolecules. ~The PDBe team further maintains a number of databases that support deposition and advanced search and analysis services for structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists).

Your role

We are looking for a software developer with a strong demonstrated record of using Python programming language and a working knowledge of relational and/or other database technologies to further develop and maintain the OneDep system. A background in, or affinity with, Structural Biology, Bioinformatics or Chemoinformatics is a distinct advantage.

The successful candidate will work closely with other members of the global OneDep team to plan and implement improvements to the system.

You have

  • You will have a degree in Computer Science/IT or Structural Biology/Bioinformatics or related fields, with a minimum 2 years’ work experience in Computer Science/ IT or Structural Biology/ Bioinformatics or related subjects.
  • A demonstrated record of software development.
  • You will have strong software engineering skills, excellent knowledge of Python (scripting, data integration, REST API development) and experience with working on collaborative code bases.
  • You will be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with the wwPDB OneDep and PDBe team members.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as excellent knowledge of English.

You might also have

  • It is desirable for you to have experience of front-end web development, with working knowledge of Git repository management.
  • Experience with chemoinformatics and experience with continuous integration and test-driven development is also desirable.
