We are looking for an enthusiastic Full Stack Developers to join the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in our mission to create scientific web services that are aesthetically pleasing, useful, usable, and empower our employees and scientists worldwide to solve the biggest challenges in biology. 

You will be a part of the EMBL-EBI COVID-19 Portal task force working closely with the Web Development team, located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to EMBL-EBI’s COVID-19 scientific response. The European COVID-19 Data Platform comprises two components: the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs for the management of outbreak sequence data and the COVID-19 Portal ( that will enable researchers to upload, access and analyse COVID-19 related reference data and specialist datasets.

Your role

As part of the EMBL-EBI COVID-19 Portal task force you will help to develop innovative web based presentations of COVID-19 data and tools held across EMBL-EBI archives for a wider scientific audience than our traditional bioinformatics customer. 

You will help design and repurpose software, including investigating and selecting appropriate technologies, to meet the data indexing and presentation needs of the project. 

You will work with teams from across EMBL-EBI and collaborate with expert scientists in a local and international setting to create innovative services. 

Your main responsibilities will be
  • Developing JavaScript/TypeScript Single Page Applications
  • Developing and consuming APIs for content management systems and data resources
  • Helping to operate and iteratively improve the products we build
  • Defining, with the team, the technical architecture for products
  • Working directly with stakeholders to better understand their needs, in order to feedback and translate these into product changes

You have

  • A BSc or MSc in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or a similar/related discipline) or equivalent work experience 
  • At least 3-4 years experience developing and architecting JavaScript SPAs (e.g. React, Angular, Vue.js). Angular experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Google Analytics and/or other web analytics tools; experience of tag management preferable. Experience using Google Studio is a plus.
  • Proficiency with the core skills of HTML5/CSS/ES6 development
  • Proficiency with modern object-oriented PHP frameworks (e.g. Symfony, Laravel)
  • Experience working with APIs and common authentication models
  • Detailed understanding of the tools and processes of the trade - Git, continuous integration pipelines, CLIs, security, unit testing, user stories, etc
  • Proficiency with database connectivity. Relational and noSQL databases (document stores (e.g MongoDB) or search engines (ElasticSearch)
  • Experience being part of an agile development process

You might also have

  • Experience developing content based websites for non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work in both Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of web applications security and automated testing tools
  • A good working knowledge of Wordpress and Drupal as content management systems
  • Experience running and troubleshooting web application servers (e.g. Apache, Nginx)
  • Experience with VM and/or container deployment (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker, etc)
  • An interest in life sciences and a desire to work in a stimulating and international culture
