We are looking for an enthusiastic Full Stack Java Developer to join the Reactome Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Reactome is a project which creates a biomolecular pathway database, based on a graph database representing a complex network of interactions and an advanced visualisation interface. Your role

As a full stack developer working on the Reactome project, you will contribute to the user-driven, continuous improvement of the resource, with opportunities for front end development, as well as middleware and backend development. Reflecting our biological subject domain, you will work intensively with our core graph database, as well as algorithms for management, analysis, and representation of complex network data.

A key strength of Reactome is its visualisation, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to the further development of Reactome visualisation, optimising the user experience. 

Reflecting the strong service orientation of the project and the collaborative environment at EMBL-EBI, team work and communication are an essential part of the position.

You have

A degree in computer science or a related field.
A minimum of 2 years experience in software development in Java, with good knowledge of:
  • Coding practices and approaches (OOP, IoC, automated testing, clean code principles, code review)
  • Indexing and database technologies and how to interact with them (Neo4J, SolR, Lucene, SQL)
  • REST APIs (preferably using Spring Framework) and knowledge of how to interface with them
  • Good understanding of JSON, XML
  • Code versioning and build automation tools, such as Git and Maven
    Experience on front-end development with technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript
  • Knowledge of GWT  
Applicants will work in a highly international, team-oriented environment and collaborate closely with external partners and other teams at EMBL-EBI.

Excellent communication and the ability to work independently are essential skills.

You might also have

A background in bioinformatics and/or knowledge of biology/biochemistry/life sciences, and a strong interest in understanding the data you'll be working with.
