Key to this mission are our people - the HR team aims to attract, engage, support and develop highly talented scientists, skilled technical and administrative experts and specialists from around the world, currently around 800 staff

EMBL-EBI is a truly international organisation, with the majority of our people originating from outside the UK – as Head of HR you will nurture, support and celebrate this diversity, which is at the core of the Institute’s success

Drawing on your experience of leadership and successful organisational change, you will support the development and implementation of HR strategy and policy decisions, and lead a professional HR team to deliver operational excellence in a busy and demanding environment

As an intergovernmental organisation, EMBL is outside the remit of many national frameworks including employment, taxation and immigration legislation - you need to gain a full and deep understanding of this context to be successful in the role

The HR team is part of a wider EMBL-EBI administration and the EMBL central HR teams -  this role reports jointly to the EMBL-EBI Head of Administration and Operations and the EMBL Head of Human Resources located at the EMBL Headquarters in Germany.  A limited amount of travel within Europe is required to build and maintain relationships across EMBL

Responsibilities include
  • Lead and develop the HR team to support and partner with the leadership, management and staff of the Institute, providing high quality professional HR advice and effective processes
  • Constantly seek to improve understanding of the aims and needs of the organisation and its people, and work closely with HR colleagues in EMBL Headquarters and EMBL-EBI leadership to develop and deliver HR strategy and policies and staff engagement
  • As part of the EMBL-EBI Administration work closely with colleagues in other support functions to provide integrated processes supporting the work of the Institute
  • Ensure consistent and transparent application of EMBL Rules and Regulations, as well as internal guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Provide advice and guidance to staff at all levels on performance management, recruitment, contracting and development
  • Initiate/contribute to process improvement and other change projects
  • Advise on compliance and risk management
  • Provide people information, data and statistics to guide decision-making and to support progress monitoring

You have

You work proactively to develop and implement solutions that benefit the organisation and the people who make it successful

Your exceptional communication skills equip you to work collaboratively and thrive in a complex multicultural environment
