We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced network engineer to join our network team within our Technical Services Cluster (TSC), serving an institute of over 800 researchers and administrative staff. You will be working closely with members of the TSC, and more widely with technical users across EMBL-EBI, playing an active role in the design, deployment and operation of our network. The EMBL-EBI network spans three geo-dispersed data centres connected via multiple 100Gb links to support the large data flows and processing services fundamental to EMBL-EBI activities.     

The services you will provide, along with the TSC provides enable EMBL-EBI’s technical research and administrative staff to make the world’s public biological data freely available to the scientific community via a range of services and tools, perform basic research and provide professional training in bioinformatics.

Your role

EMBL-EBI is custodian to an ever increasing volume of data which is made publicly available and is processed internally via multiple HPC clusters, virtualisation platforms and private & public clouds. This position offers you the chance to work with a great team, gain experience with a range of high end hardware, covering the gamut from routing and switching, firewalls and load balancers, as well as the opportunity to architect and implement EMBL-EBIs uniquely high bandwidth networking with cloud providers.

Working as part of the 3 member network team, under the direction of the Network and Data Centre Coordinator, you will:
  • Ensure the day-to-day operation, reliability, and integrity of EMBL-EBI networks
  • Recommend design and deploy future EMBL-EBI network systems and infrastructure, including both logical configuration and physical racking and cabling
  • Investigate and resolve complex issues where in-depth evaluation of various technical and non-technical factors is required
  • Build positive relationships, communicating openly and professionally within the team and with stakeholders from the TSC and wider EMBL-EBI community
  • Support collaboration with JISC and other EMBL-EBI ISPs, and other networking partners as required
You will work both collaboratively and with a reasonable degree of autonomy and regularly present your work back to collaborators and stakeholders to gather feedback. 

You have

  • At least 7 years of experience in the information technology and networking fields
  • A minimum of CCNA, ideally CCNP, or equivalent certification
  • Extensive and proven experience may be substituted for certification where appropriate
  • Experience in and deploying LAN/MAN/WAN functionality such switching and routing and cabling system
In-depth understanding of:
  • Routing protocols to include BGP and OSPF
  • Data Center switching
  • Access networks, including dynamic networking and 802.1x
  • VLANs, LACP, MLAG, VRRP STP, VRF, HSRP, FHRP
  • Security technologies to include firewalls, VPNs, and security best practices
  • Experience in a heterogeneous computing and networking environment
  • Solid Linux and scripting skills
  • Solid interpersonal and written English communication skills

You might also have

  • Experience with Arista, Juniper, A10, F5 and Pulse Secure hardware
  • Solid conceptual understanding of DNS, DHCP and experience with Infoblox
  • Experience in architecting and deploying connectivity within and to cloud providers
