Are you looking for a leadership role where you can utilise your passion for open science and open access, ultimately leading to the development of a widely used public resource?

In this unique position you will have the opportunity to lead EMBL-EBI's diverse and forward thinking Literature Services team, who are proud to be responsible for running Europe PMC. This is an invaluable resource and the work that your team undertakes will impact how science communication is achieved in the future.

We are looking for an engaging leader who understands the importance of teamwork, is focused on the delivery of key tasks and who can contribute to the strategic vision of Europe PMC and literature-data integration at EMBL-EBI.

The mission of Europe PMC is to provide a comprehensive and searchable archive of full text, open access research articles linked to underlying open data and other key information such as ORCIDs and grant IDs. It currently comprises over 6.8M full text articles, 38 million abstracts and 275,000 preprint records and is continually growing. Europe PMC is a heavily used resource embedded in a culture of open data infrastructure at the EMBL-EBI, so plays a leading role in open science delivery and standards development.

As the repository underpinning the open access policies of 33 funders of life science research, Europe PMC operates a manuscript submission system and grants database in support of these policies. All content is made available via the website, APIs and bulk download sites. Europe PMC is built in collaboration with PMC based at the NLM, USA.

The Literature Services team also has a data science programme that undertakes text mining and machine learning initiatives, typical in collaboration with related programmes and resources such as Open Targets, ELIXIR, and BioStudies. The team extracts biological entities and relationships, as well as information such as funding source and data accession numbers for reuse in a variety of impact analyses.

Your role

This post is an EMBL faculty role, in which the first priority is to run Europe PMC and related services. There are three main parts to this exciting role:

  3. Collaboration, with colleagues in scientific publishing and related infrastructures worldwide, and across EMBL and the EMBL-EBI in particular.
At EMBL, there is a particular role for Europe PMC to play in the strategy and implementation of EMBL’s open science policy and in the integration of publications with data resources. A flexible approach to new developments and funding opportunities will be required to ensure Europe PMC remains a leading community resource.
