Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Systems Biologist to lead the BioModels project at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

The European Bioinformatics Institute provides cutting edge research and services for biomolecular data. In international collaboration, the Molecular Networks Team provides among others the Reactome database of curated human pathways (http://www.reactome.org), and the BioModels database of systems biology models (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/biomodels). We are recruiting a new project lead for the BioModels repository of computational models of biological processes.

The BioModels Project Leader, who will have a strong background in both biology/biochemistry and mathematics/computer science, is expected to significantly contribute to the team strategy and ensure the day-to-day grant and staff management. You will contribute to project tracking and reporting, as well as grant writing.

The Project Leader will coordinate and contribute to the BioModels analysis and curation of relevant literature. You will provide the biological expertise that underpins the development of automated analysis systems, and advise the development team in the scientific and user oriented design of BioModels software tools. You will work with EMBL-EBI internal and external collaborators, and define the BioModels outreach and training strategy. The role holder will contribute to the selection, training, and assessment of new BioModels team members.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess a PhD or comparable qualification in life sciences or mathematics/computer science.

Excellent knowledge in the domain of systems biology is mandatory, experience in the provision of bioinformatics services would be a strong plus.

Applicants will work in a highly international, team-oriented environment and collaborate closely with developers, bioinformaticians and scientists across EMBL-EBI and with external partners. Excellent communication skills are required.

Candidates should have a good understanding of current strategies in bioinformatics service provision, and excellent knowledge in systems biology modeling approaches.

Benefits

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
