Job Description

We are seeking to recruit two Research Support Officers to assist the Team Leaders leading the different Clusters (Cluster is equivalent to Department) with planning and co-ordination of external grants and overall scientific management and to ensure that all of the funded projects with the teams are running smoothly.

The Research Support Officer role will provide an exciting opportunity for you to develop your skills in a wide range of areas, and to work with some of the most important databases for life scientists worldwide: EMBL-EBI develops and maintains a diverse range of molecular databases spanning the areas of genomics, proteomics, structural biology, chemistry, and literature services, among others.

The main activities you will be involved in are:

  • Supporting the management of the on-going activities and reporting for existing externally funded grants from the Wellcome Trust, EU, NIH and UK Research Councils in coordination with the EBI and EMBL grants offices

  • Assistance in monitoring the budget and staffing of the team, for example by producing reports

  • Assistance in the organisation, planning and preparation of grant applications to relevant funding agencies

  • Arranging, planning and ensuring regular attendance at internal meetings among the major projects of the team, with support from the Cluster Secretaries

  • Supporting aspects of organising and planning relevant events such as conferences, meetings of scientific consortia and the scientific advisory board meetings for the team's major projects

  • Helping to improve research management processes, for example by writing up processes and investigating new tools where necessary

  • Assisting in the preparation of publications, press releases and other external communication.

You will be part of the new Research Management Office, and will be supervised by the Research Management Office Lead. The Research Officer will work closely with several Faculty Team Leaders, the other members of the Research Management Office, and the EBI and EMBL administration, in particular the Grants Office. The appointees will be assigned to support specific Clusters and Teams within EMBL-EBI, but will also need to work with other Teams as required.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and Experience

You should have a degree in the Life Sciences, or another relevant area. A Ph.D. or Masters in the Life Sciences, or equivalent experience is ideal. Some experience with the subject matter of the EMBL-EBI’s services, outlined above, would be an advantage but is not essential.

Applicants should be familiar with modern technologies used for communicating, report writing and monitoring progress. Experience of either working with multiple partners from different countries, or the coordination of complex tasks, would be beneficial. Applicants must also have a high degree of ability in handling numerical or financial data.

Excellent English and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work alone or as part of a group. Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise different tasks are also essential.

You must be familiar with the major software packages, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and must be comfortable in learning new software and tools.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside.
