We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral fellow to investigate context dependent changes in cell signalling using single cell microscopy, image analysis and modelling. Our group is interested in studying the molecular sources of phenotypic novelty. Within this broad scope the group has been focused on the study of function, specificity and genetic determinants of post-translational regulatory networks. As part of this research agenda, we are interested in understanding how changes in cellular states driven by differentiation, tissue of origin, genetic background or cell-to-cell communication alter signaling networks of the cells. The successful applicant would be combining our ongoing work on condition dependent phosphoproteomics (Ochoa et al. Mol Sys Bio 2016, http://phosphate.com) and variant effect predictions (http://mutfunc.com) with single cell microscopy readouts and modeling of cell signaling with the aim of understanding changes in kinase signaling due to genetic or differentiation differences. These studies will be part of a broader collaborative effort with microscopy labs working on cell imaging of human cells in different contexts (e.g. cancer, differentiation and cell cycle). The proposed projects will involve quantitative analysis of single-cells and cell populations by live-cell imaging and reverse engineering approaches for network reconstruction.
EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. We have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
Qualifications and Experience
Considered applicants must hold a PhD in Life Sciences and have previous experience in quantitative approaches and computational biology. The ideal candidate will have expertise in modelling of dynamical systems and image analysis. Experience in mammalian cell signaling will be considered an asset. The postholder should enjoy working in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
