EMBO is seeking a highly motivated scientist with broad and international high-level research experience for the role of Scientific Editor at The EMBO Journal. The Scientific Editor has broad responsibilities to ensure that The EMBO Journal publishes peer-reviewed material of the highest quality and broad general interest, and that the editorial process is fair, informed and efficient.

Your role

The successful candidate will be responsible for selecting research papers as well as commissioning reviews and commentaries in a number of subject areas for publication in EMBO Press journals. The candidate will be expected to form extensive contacts to the scientific community, to engage in regular travel to conferences and research institutions, to give relevant talks and engage in training and social media activities. The Scientific Editor will be involved in all publication activities at the EMBO Press journals as well as other EMBO activities.
  • In the assigned subject areas, critically evaluate submitted manuscripts, identification of suitable reviewers/advisors or editorial board members, and the communication of appropriate editorial criteria and decisions.
  • Interact with the other editors to ensure robust and consistent decision-making.
  • Meet editorial and production deadlines. Monitor performance of the journal, in particular in assigned subject areas. Take action to ensure the journal retains its status as a leading, broad international life sciences research journal.
  • Assessment and execution of research misconduct cases.
  • Commissioning, developmental editing and, where required, peer review of scientific reviews, commentaries and ‘News & Views’ articles in the assigned subject areas. 
  • Transfer of manuscripts that meet EMBO Press publication policies and editorial standards for production. Liaison with the production department and authors to ensure efficient publication.
  • Attendance or co-organization of conferences and visits to research institutions to represent The EMBO Journal, the other three EMBO scientific publications, EMBO Press, as well as the other EMBO departments. The delivery of talks and training programmes related to scientific communication.
  • Involvement in publicity and social media activities in assigned subject areas. 
  • Writing and editing of highlights, summaries and press releases in assigned subject areas. 
  • Support the graphic designers in figure development.
  • Cover for other editors during conference travel, vacation and other leave.
  • Assessment of EMBO Short Term Fellowships and presentation of EMBO Gold medal candidates as required.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of training modules at EMBO/GFLW as required.
  • Involvement in the strategic development of EMBO Press publishing initiatives.
  • Perform additional tasks as required by the Head of Scientific Publications or the EMBO Director.
This position will occasionally require duty travel and working outside of the normal working hours, in the evenings or during the weekend.

One or more successful postdocs; senior academic and/or editorial qualifications are welcome. We particularly welcome applications from experts in RNA biology, Chromatin & Epigenetics, Gene Transcription, Protein Translation and Quality Control.
