We have an opening for a highly motivated scientist in the Synchrotron Crystallography team at the EMBL Grenoble. This team works in close collaboration with the ESRF Structural Biology Group in the operation and development of high performance structural biology beamlines with the aim of impacting on challenging structural biological problems. Towards this goal, as well as providing world leading experimental facilities for Structural Biology, the Grenoble Joint Structural Biology Group (JSBG) also develops advanced instrumentation and data collection methods.
The successful candidate is expected to lead the EMBL-Grenoble’s contribution to the post Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) upgrade and subsequent operation of the automated, state-of-the-art crystallography ESRF ID30A-1/MASSIF-1 beamline. In a first phase, the planned upgrade of MASSIF-1 includes an improved X-ray optics setup and the installation of a high performance MD2S diffracometer coupled to a FlexHCD sample changer. A second phase will see the integration of CrystalDirect harvesting device. The position available represents an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to contribute to a substantial upgrade of MASSIF-1 and to the further development of mail-in macromolecuar-crystallography possibilities for the European structural biology community. He/She is expected to actively participate in local and international initiatives aimed at the further development of automated data collection protocols required to maximise the post ESRF-EBS scientific potential of MASSIF-1. The successful candidate will also be expected to carry out their own structural biology research project based on use of synchrotron radiation.
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in Structural Biology or a related discipline and a minimum of five years of synchrotron beamline experience in automation as applied to Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments and data analysis. A practical knowledge and interest in synchrotron beamline instrumentation and developing new methods for MX at advanced light sources is essential. The candidate should also be familiar with the latest MX software developments.

This post holder will require excellent communication skills and have the ability to work within a highly professional and dedicated team of scientists, engineers and technicians. He/She will be expected to represent the Synchrotron Crystallography team within the JSBG on the EPN campus and at international meetings. He/She will also be expected to give presentations, contribute to training, and to produce other project specific documentation. Advanced English is required and basic French would be beneficial.
