The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranking scientific research organisations in the world. The Laboratory’s Headquarters is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Barcelona (Spain), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The Bio Hub of Euro-BioImaging ERIC is based at EMBL and the successful applicant of the advertised position will be based at the Heidelberg site.

Euro-BioImaging ERIC (www.eurobioimaging.eu) is now establishing itself as the open access gateway to European imaging excellence in the life sciences. It is currently supported by 15 European countries and EMBL, and provides open access and high-quality services to biological and biomedical imaging across Europe. Euro-BioImaging is managed by its Hub, which comprises the Statutory Seat in Finland, the Med-Hub in Italy, and the Bio-Hub at EMBL.

Euro-BioImaging has an exceptionally broad user base encompassing academics and industrial scientists from all career stages and fields of research. Effective outreach to Euro-BioImaging’s user base and continuous communication with its varied stakeholders will be a key component for success of this young European research infrastructure. Therefore, we are seeking one full-time candidate to join the team at the Bio-Hub at EMBL Heidelberg for the position of External Communication Officer.

Your role

The External Communication Officer will work for the Euro-BioImaging Hub and implement the communication strategy for the research infrastructure. This involves flexible yet bespoke outreach to key stakeholders such as the European scientific communities, (new) Member States and their imaging communities, technology developers, other research infrastructures, funders, industry etc. The responsibilities of this position include:
  • Proactively driving the communication and inter-personal relationships across the Euro-BioImaging’s diverse stakeholder groups, including its user community
  • Close interactions with the participating partner institutions and Euro-BioImaging Nodes
  • Preparation and dissemination of information material to Euro-BioImaging partners, external stakeholders, and the general public
  • Contribution and support of European projects
  • Development, review and implementation of communication strategies and tools to reach varied stakeholders under different situations
  • Maintenance and regular updating of the Euro-BioImaging website with latest information
  • Maintenance and regular updating of the Euro-BioImaging social media tools (including Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Assembling briefing materials, organization of meetings and visits, preparation of reports
  • Effective planning and implementation of the communication and related management tasks
  • Preparation and presentation of reports and deliverables to tight timelines
  • Providing and supporting the Euro-BioImaging Hub at EMBL, Finland, and Italy with key external communication tasks and activities
The External Communication Officer will work closely with and report to the Section Director of the Euro-BioImaging Bio-Hub.

The ideal candidate should be able to combine external communication, management and scientific experience to provide optimal solutions for the different stakeholders. As successful candidate you are/have:
  • A motivated self-starter with a proven ability to independently manage project implementation and delivery within a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Experience in external communication, preferably in a scientific environment (and ideally in imaging technologies and their applications)
  • Proven ability to effectively interact with multiple stakeholders on international and interdisciplinary level are required
  • A high level of literacy and experience of working in a high-paced professional, academic environment
  • Effective multi-tasking and the ability to work with tight deadlines 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to move between the scientific and managerial level
  • A high standard of written and spoken English is mandatory

  • An advanced life-science degree (Master or higher) with relevant experience is beneficial.
