EMBL is seeking a research technician to join Dr. Jan Korbel's group in the Genome Biology Unit. The post holder will work in a leading laboratory focusing on genomics and single cell technology-driven research projects. A particular research focus of the lab is on studying genetic variation – specifically genomic structural variation, a class of genetic variation linked to numerous traits and disease phenotypes. The work will be carried out in an international, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative environment at the cutting edge of human disease genomics, with a range of possibilities to acquire new skills and techniques. The Korbel group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) combines experimental and computational approaches, including single-cell sequencing technology, to unravel determinants and consequences of germline and somatic genetic variation. Our group is using bulk as well as single cell-based omics approaches for investigating mechanisms behind complex phenotypes in humans, ranging from common diseases including cancer to ageing. An over-arching theme centers on the formation and selection of germline and somatic genetic variation in health and disease states, in particular genomic structural variation (SV).

Your role

The post holder will be responsible for molecular biology and genomics experiments. In more detail, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for cell culture, multiple omics and single cell sequencing techniques and quality control steps (including basic data analyses). Tasks will also include, though not be limited to, Illumina-based genomic and transcriptomic sequencing library preparation, single cell template strand sequencing (Strand-seq), work with high-throughput liquid handling/robotic systems, cell culture work, flow cytometry and cell sorting, PCR/qPCR-based validations, as well as optionally the running of standard computational analysis pipelines and other routine tasks in the laboratory. The post holder’s tasks also range from planning and executing molecular biological and genomic analyses, establishing novel techniques, and contributing to key projects central to the lab’s success forward. In the latter context, occasional work on an “own” research project may be possible (depending on the interests of the appointed person). The high sample number from various projects will require exact documentation, and thorough experimental handling. Duties will therefore include organizational and technical assistance within the lab

You have

The ideal applicant has an appropriate university degree (Masters or Bachelor degree or equivalent). Under specific circumstances candidates with a PhD and publications who wish to change their career path can also be considered (salary will be commensurate with experience). We are looking for an exceptionally qualified Research Technician who is well-organized, creative, highly motivated and likes to accept new challenges. Excellent communications skills and a working knowledge of English are essential. The post holder should be able to work independently, be communicative and should enjoy working in a team of young scientists within a highly collaborative atmosphere.

You might also have

The post holder should be able to work independently, be communicative and should enjoy working in a team of young scientists within a highly collaborative atmosphere. Extensive prior experience in molecular biology or genomics will be considered as a plus. Familiarity with new DNA sequencing technologies (next generation sequencing), single cell technologies, and/or organoids would be an asset.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises from a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus. You will be involved in many ongoing cutting-edge projects and activities and will collaborate with experts from the scientific community and have the possibility to acquire new state-of-the-art skills.

What else you need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
