The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Monterotondo near Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).   EMBL is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic illustrator with a background in graphic design. Experience in medical illustration or any visual scientific communication is advantageous. You will be responsible for creating inviting and inspirational visuals that spread life science knowledge both within the molecular biology community, and to the wider public. You have the scientific knowledge to grasp complex information, distil it down and illustrate the story in a clear visual narrative that is accurate, educational and engaging.   As part of the Design team, you will work closely with EMBL scientists and EMBL’s Communications team. Your output will include visual content for journals, books, presentations, magazines, campaigns, film, web, interactive and mobile media, virtual reality and exhibits.  

Your role

• Conceptual design to support engaging content for offline and online channels • Create inspirational compositions to support EMBL’s corporate visual language • Design accurate charts and graphs from data • Illustrations for publication in professional journals, for use in lectures and various other formats like videos and embl.org • Animate 3D visuals and 2D graphics • Collaborate with various stakeholders to support targeted communications and design solutions • Incorporate UI/UX best practices in website design and layout, and adapt designs for different formats and various audiences • contribute ideas to campaigns for social media and internal communications and outreach activities.  

You have

The candidate will come to the role with a strong background in graphic arts: • Prior experience creating illustrations and graphics with a solid grasp of design concepts • Comfort working in Adobe Creative Suite and any 3D rendering software • Illustration skills with the ability to apply different illustration styles for various audiences • Enthusiasm for the design process and attentiveness to different project goals • Ability to work in collaborative group environment • Ability to juggle multiple projects • Creative thinker • Proactive, self-starter, good work ethic • Creative problem solver  

You might also have

An excellent command of spoken and written English is required; knowledge of other languages, particularly French, German, Italian or Spanish, is a plus. A passion for science is advantageous.
