The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies. We are looking for a highly motivated, dynamic and well-organised individual with a strong scientific background and excellent scientific writing skills to support grant writing and management, communication, and other strategic initiatives related to Infection Biology research ongoing in the institute. Fundamental research is urgently needed to better understand longstanding and emerging infectious diseases and to find therapies against them. This is critically relevant in times that emerging pathogens can bring the whole world to a halt, the antimicrobial resistance crisis is shaking the foundations of modern medicine, and many well-known pathogens still kill millions around the world. EMBL integrates a multitude of experimental and computational approaches to understand pathogen biology, host-pathogen interactions, and the ability of pathogens to spread in populations. Such studies are expected to impact on a number of applications including antimicrobial resistance, diagnostics, drug discovery, and outbreak surveillance.

S/He will survey for suitable grant calls in the area of Infection Biology; assist in identifying common axes and strategic connections across different EMBL groups that enable new grant applications; and outline, draft, elaborate or tailor grant proposals together with the scientists involved. S/He will interact tightly with EMBL administration (Grants, Strategy, International Relations and Communications offices) and with representatives from collaborating research institutions. Tasks:

Infection Biology is one of EMBL’s focal areas in its new ambitious program. The candidate would have the opportunity to help shaping new directions and research in a very dynamic environment, and in a topic that has become more relevant than ever before. We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. EMBL was set up to promote molecular biology across Europe, and to create a centre of excellence for training Europe's leading young molecular biologists.
