We are looking for a Project Officer to join the team for 12 months as cover for Parental Leave. The Project Officer manages the budgets of the training teams at both sites and is the sole finance position in the teams; you will therefore need to be able to work independently whilst also working well alongside non-financial professionals. Your primary role will be to provide support to the management teams such that they have the information they need to make decisions for the programme. Additionally you will be providing regular updates to senior management and directors, and offering day to day support in the team operations. As such, you must be adept at working effectively with financial and non-financial stakeholders at all levels of seniority.

Your role

  • Prepare the annual budgets for External Training & EMBL-EBI Training teams including event, office & salary budgets  
  • Monitor & control revenue and expenditure against budgets and update management and finance teams on any forecast over or under spend
  • Develop budget models for training activities and input to the programming strategy based on the advanced forecasts generated
  • Monitor the budget and expenditure of externally funded projects and ensure Project Managers are kept informed of each project’s financial position
  • Liaise with the grants and finance departments as needed to ensure that the budgeting and reporting of externally funded projects are accurate and complete
  • Take responsibility (with the relevant budget holders) for ensuring good practice and compliance in the financial operations of the training teams with both EMBL internal policies and external requirements.
  • Prepare and submit the budgets required for EMBO applications
  • Cost control and benchmarking to ensure both training teams both obtain and provide value for money in their operations 
  • Support events organisers across both sites with day to day financial queries
  • Lead and support on ad-hoc projects as required

You have

  • At least 3 years experience in project and financial controlling 
  • Sound knowledge of budgetary control
  • Proven experience working in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment
  • The ability to work independently 
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Solid knowledge of the usual Microsoft Office software packages, especially Excel
  • Accountancy qualification or equivalent

This job will require travel to EMBL-EBI in Hinxton if based in Heidelberg, or to EMBL Heidelberg if based in Hinxton.
