The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).
EMBL is seeking a research technician to join Dr. Jan Korbel's group in the Genome Biology Unit to work on single cell genomics projects. The focus will be on studying genetic variation – specifically genomic structural variation, linked to numerous traits and disease phenotypes – in single cells. The post holder will be responsible for cell culture, single cell genome sequencing experiments and quality control steps (including basic data analyses). Tasks will further include: Illumina-based sequencing library preparation, cell culture work, flow cytometry and cell sorting, PCR/qPCR-based validations, running standard analysis pipelines and other routine tasks in the laboratory. The high sample number from various projects will require exact documentation, and thorough experimental handling. Furthermore, duties of the technician will include organizational and technical assistance within the lab.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, eager to learn exciting new techniques in genomics and single cell sequencing, and work within a collaborative team. Frequent interaction with lab members and collaborators within the vibrant international setting of the EMBL, one of the leading institutes in the life sciences, will represent another central crucial aspect of the job.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal applicant has a university degree (Masters or Bachelor degree or equivalent), or alternatively technical school training as a technician. Extensive prior experience in molecular biology or genomics will be considered as a plus. Familiarity with new DNA sequencing technologies (next generation sequencing) and/or single cell approaches would be considered an advantage, along with any prior experience with robotic liquid handling platforms, but will be part of the on-the-job training if required. The post holder should enjoy working in a team of young scientists within a highly collaborative and international atmosphere. Organizational, problem solving, and good communication skills along with the ability to interact with other scientists in English and to work in a team setting are essential.
Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs
The contract will initially be given for one year to support current demands in single cell genomics in the Korbel group, with the chance to extend further. Applications for part time employment may be considered.
