The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).
EMBL Heidelberg is seeking a Mechanical design Officer for its Engineering Workshops, which are equipped to carry out a great variety of tool-making and precision engineering on metal and plastic materials. The Mechanical design Officer has the main task to convert ideas and requests from scientists to well-defined mechanical drawings, which serve for the construction and realisation of new user-friendly state of the art scientific devices and instruments by the Mechanical and Electronics Engineering Teams. The officer is further involved in the implementation, testing and improvement of the designed equipment.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should hold a university degree in mechanical engineering or have several years experience in technical design as Precision Engineer/Technical Designer. Previous experience in mechanical design and construction of scientific instruments would be an advantage. Good working knowledge of modern computer aided design tools (SolidWorks) and MS Office is essential. A good command of English and German is required. Strong communication skills are needed to understand the requirements of users and in order to develop proposals for their projects in collaboration with the EMBL Engineering Workshops. As multiple projects occur concurrently, excellent organizational and time management skills are essential.
